Michael Leuschner was born in 1948 in Wernigerode (Germany) and grew up in Göttingen. His first piano teachers were Meta Conrad and Martin Galling. After his Abitur he first studied musicology and German literature in Göttingen before beginning his piano studies at the Musikhochschule (University of Music) Freiburg under Edith Picht Axenfeld and Carl Seemann. A scholarship enabled him to continue his studies in London with Bernard Roberts and in Positano (Italy) with Wilhelm Kempff. Additionally he took part in a Schubert-masterclass with Alfred Brendel. He was prizewinner in two German competitions.

From 1970 until 1974 Michael Leuschner gave concerts as a member of the Freiburg Ensemble for Contemporary Music and later he continued his career as a soloist giving recitals and chamber music performances in many European countries, Asia, Australia, South America and in the USA. His extensive repertoire includes many of the major works of Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann and Debussy. He has recorded and performed in several cities the complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven sonatas. He is member of the "Dreisam Trio" together with Nicolas Chumachenco (Violin) and Christoph Henkel (Cello).

Michael Leuschner prefers especially Steinway pianos and he is a Steinway Artist.

Well over hundred radio recordings for nearly all German stations, as well as in Switzerland, England (BBC), Australia (ABC and other broadcasting stations) document his interpretations. Several Compact Discs are published in the USA: 3 Clementi sonatas (Brioso 102), in Germany: Bach, Mozart, Schubert (abadone 93202), Schumann, Chopin, Debussy (abadone 93203), Bach, Beethoven, Brahms (Germany 2014) and in Japan: Haendel, Chopin and Beethoven (ACJ 901), Beethoven (ACJ 904), Bach, Schubert, Brahms and Debussy (ACJ 902 and 903). Long Play records were published in Switzerland: Schubert Music for piano 4 hands with Rosemarie Burri (Pan 130 049) and in Germany: Brahms Liebesliederwalzer op.52 and op.65 with Martin Galling, Gächinger Kantorei under Helmuth Rilling (BASF 39 226 301).

Michael Leuschner was professor at the Hochschule für Musik and Theater in Hanover from 1984 to 1989 and from 1989 to 2014 he taught as professor of piano at the Musikhochschule (University of Music) in Freiburg where he was head of the keyboard department for many years. 1990 he was invited as artist in residence at the University of Western Australia in Perth. He has given masterclasses in many cities in Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Japan, the USA, Russia, Spain, Georgia and the Ukraine.
